Staples To Shut Down 225 North American Stores, amidst falling sales,



Staples closed 109 stores in North America and Europe in 2013, the company said. It currently operates more than 2,200 stores worldwide, including 1,515 stores in the United States and 331 in Canada


Top 500 U.S. E-Retailers - Staples shifts investment to the web - Internet Retailer: "As part of a plan to cut costs by $500 million, Staples says it plans to close up to 225 North American stores by the end of 2015. But on Staples.com, where sales are up amid a drop in total sales, the company grew its number of products as of the end of 2013 to 500,000 from 100,000 a year earlier.

During the earnings call ,staples announced  to close 225 stores or about 12% of its 1800 stores  across North America by the end of 2014 . According to Staples around 50% of its products are being sold online and the shutting down of its 225 stores, is a indication that : Staples wants to be present where its users are..

This signals " the shift of online retail stationary store ' from physical format to " digital stores"   as increasing online sales, continue to " challenge " retail formats"

The stationery store   has  around 2,000 stores worldwide in 26 countries. Staples inc opened its first store in Brighton, Massachusetts on May 1st,1986
