Take a Look at the iPhone 4 - in Bits!

Like thousands around the globe, Bill Detwiler from TechRepublic wasted no time in opening his Apple iPhone 4. The only difference is once he had finished queuing for more than 13 hours outside his local Apple Store, he decided to "begin cracking it open."

It's an interesting look inside a piece of ultra-sleek machinery, with plenty of images in the original article. The image below shows the surprisingly low number of parts required to make the most desired piece of technology on the planet.

The Apple Store looks busy from Firebrand Training HQ

As we look out of the window of Firebrand Training HQ - on Regent Street, London - it's hard to miss the queue ever-growing outside the Apple Store.

Today's the day that the Apple iPhone 4 is released, and as early as 7am the queue was 600 strong.

The current queue seems to have snaked back and forth three times along Regent Street - I think we'll wait a few days before we buy ours.

IT issues take precedence over World Cup for networkers

Tufin Technologies found that 87% of IT professionals would miss the World Cup Final in order to fix an IT disaster.

One respondent philosophically explained: "the score will not change if you're not watching it" - while another exclaimed: "you must fix your ship or sink with it."

Shaul Efraim;
Tufin's VP of products, marketing and business development; said: “Although there have been many reports of people skiving to watch the matches...our study shows that many network defenders will not be taking their eye of the ball.

“IT professionals have been busy preparing for this event in the months preceding the opening ceremony in South Africa, fully aware that there will be others within the organisation that could compromise the system by streaming video content, downloading apps and visiting websites."

SC Magazine states that UK web traffic during the World Cup so far has increased by as much as 50% during matches.

is embracing the World Cup; with all England matches being shown live at our training centre.

Microsoft Office 2010 Web Apps looks like a great freebie

Microsoft chose the wrong day to officially launch Office 2010 Web Apps. Monday 7 June just happened to be the same day that Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4, which, needless to say, kind of stole the limelight.

Office Web Apps is a free service available at office.live.com (for the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland). Just log-in with your Windows Live ID, and you're ready to create Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote documents online.

These are stripped-down versions of the full Office 2010, but they are rumoured to be the largest JavaScript Web apps ever produced.

The apps run quickly, and are all set amongst the familiar Microsoft Office environment. With a generous 25GB of free storage space - via SkyDrive - there is plenty of room for you to take your office online. And guess what - it even seems to work well on mobile devices.

See a screengrab below, provided by TechRepublic.

Malware is being sent via Twitter

We're all wary (and weary) of receiving a 'dodgy' tweet or email that leads to an even dodgier site. These are now becoming nastier, with payloads embedded in Twitter links, with random '@'s being used to catch users' attention.

Example of a naughty Tweet
The image above is an example of a shortened url, which leads to a site hosting some JavaScript. The potential pitfall of a shortened url.

Trendmicro explains that if this link were to be clicked, an “unpleasant payload” would be downloaded to the unsuspecting user’s PC.

Other recent examples include the Gaza and FIFA World Cup spamming campaigns, which used social engineering to make users think they were clicking on a news item. The malware downloaded in these cases were able to send and receive files and retrieve user names and passwords.

The Importance of Penetration Testing

The latest edition of Certification Magazine looks at the importance of - and developments in - penetration testing.

The use of networks is rife in our everyday work and leisure. This means that our personal - and valuable - data is heading off in all different directions. It is now more apparant than ever that this data needs to be safeguarded for the benefit of all of us.

These technological developments have led to the increased importance of the role of the penetration tester.
Certification Magazine describes this person as: "a kind of digital spy, deliberately hacking into companies’ networks to identify weaknesses and fix them, preferably before an actual breach occurs."

Billy Austin, chief security officer for Saint Corp, explains: “You’ve got to switch your white hat into a black hat.

“What we have to do is become more offensive-type minded people. It’s crucial to have the characteristics or mindset of understanding what the attacker’s moves are going to be, and what those processes and procedures and all the different routes that someone can take [are].”

The importance of the role shouldn't detract from how interesting it is too. Whether the individual is attempting to hack into their own systems or piecing together the evidence at a hacking 'crime' scene, it rarely proves to be dull.

Microsoft MCAS Reverts Back to MOS

Since the beginning of June, the title of the certification program Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS) has been reverted back to Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS).

Moving to the term 'MCAS' was never popular. Microsoft states that: "The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification now extends to all versions of Microsoft Office, including the 2007 Microsoft Office System and Microsoft Office 2010, as well as Windows desktop operating systems."

MCAS holders are now automatically considered MOS 2007 certified. However, those that want a new certificate are being told that they will need to purchase one for a small fee.

Cisco CCIE coming soon...

Cisco recently announced that the four "core knowledge" questions that were added to the CCIE R&S v4.0 and Voice v3.0 exams a year ago have now been removed. This is due to the fact that the rest of the exam is deemed to be successfully validating expert skills.

However, they will continue to be used in other CCIE lab exams. Core knowledge questions appear at the beginning of an exam, and normally require five words or less to answer.

Cisco explains: "Total lab time will remain at eight hours. For the CCIE R&S Lab Exam, this means candidates will begin with the two-hour Troubleshooting section, followed by a six-hour Configuration section.

"For CCIE Voice, candidates will have the full eight hours to complete the integrated exam. At this time, only the R&S and Voice certifications have been designed and validated to allow removal of Core Knowledge."

Continue to check the Firebrand Training website, as we will soon be offering the Cisco CCIE certification faster than anyone else.

VMware vs. Microsoft vs. Citrix

There is an interesting debate unfolding on Networkworld.com. The article suggests that VMware is no longer monopolising the server virtualization market. Microsoft, Citrix and more are competing for space.

VMware remains the daddy of server virtualization services, but Microsoft and Citrix are giving it a good run for its money. The dawn of cloud computing is said to be causing this surge in competitiveness. Microsoft has been boldly stating that "We're all in" - stating that "70 per cent of Microsoft engineers are working on something to do with the cloud."

According to Gartner, at the turn of 2010, only 18% of enterprise data centers that could be virtualized had been virtualized. This provides ample opportunity for VMware's competitors to gain ground on the pioneering vendor.

Firebrand training offers both VMware VSphere 4.0 Certified Virtualization Expert and Microsoft MCTS Windows Server Virtualization courses - call us on 080 80 800 888 to see which is best for you.
