Project Management Professional (PMP), established by Project Management Institute (PMI), is one of the most sought after certification in project management.
As of 31 July 2010, there were 393,413 PMP certified professionals worldwide.
A PMP cert proves that you have the experience, knowledge and skills to successfully lead and direct projects.
The PMP exam is based on the PMP Examination Specification, which describes tasks out of five performance domains:
- Initiating the project (13%)
- Planning the project (24%)
- Executing the project (30%)
- Monitoring and controlling the project (25%)
- Closing the project (8%)
The PMP exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions. The numbers in brackets show the percentage of questions for each domain. The time to complete the examination is four hours.
To obtain the PMP credential, you must meet the following requirements:
Non-degree education: 7,500 hours of project management experience; 60 unique (non-overlapping) months of project management experience within the eight-year period prior to the application; 35 contact hours of project management education
For candidates with a degree: 4,500 hours of project management experience; 36 unique (non-overlapping) months of project management experience within the eight-year period prior to the application; 35 contact hours of project management education
The PMI Pulse of the Profession study found that businesses with 35% or more PMP certified project managers had better project performance. And a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey reveals that 80% of high-performing projects use a certified project manager.
Your PMP credential is valid for the three years. To maintain your PMP credential, PMI requires 60 PDUs during each three-year renewal period.
