AdWords system is temporarily down for maintenance

Those trying to log in to their Google Adwords account this morning are being greeted with the following error message:

"Thank you for your interest in advertising with Google. We apologize for any inconvenience, but the AdWords system is temporarily down for maintenance. Please try again in a few minutes"

As of yet it is unclear whether this is routine maintenance or Google has experienced some sort of server  failure. If it is a system failure, it would be the third time in a week where Google has experience such an issue with YouTube going offline twice in the last week.
